This message has advice for how to make good progress through the ERE major, including specific information related to Spring 2018 registration.  Read carefully all sections that pertain to your situation.  

New for Spring 2018, you must plan at least three semesters ahead using DARS Degree Planner (except graduating seniors). Complete your plan before your advising appointment.

New for Spring 2018, you will be required to complete an “Intent to Enroll Agreement” prior to registering for any courses. The agreement will appear on your To Do List in your Student Center, and will hold registration until it is completed.

For Spring 2018, enrollment in the following ENGR courses will be by instructor approval/permission number only:  ENGR 211 (Dynamics), ENGR 225 (Comp I), ENGR 325 (Comp II), ENGR 492 (Capstone), ENGR 481 (Water), and ENGR 481 (Grid).  Please see specific comments for each these classes below.

How to Request a Permission # or Get on a Waitlist

Please send all requests for Permission Numbers by Friday, Nov 3, a week from today.  Most Permission Numbers will be distributed by midnight on Monday, Nov 6.  Your email request for a permission number must include:

• A PDF of your DARS - Degree Audit Report for Students (do not confuse the new Degree Course Planner with the Degree Audit Report)
• An explanation of why you are requesting a permission number.  Explain why you already do or do not have the prerequisites.
• If you are requesting a permission number for a 400-level course:  an indication of the number of ERE required courses you have left to take after completing this Fall 2017 semester, and the semester you plan to graduate.
• If the class has multiple lab sections: an indication of which lab you prefer.

We have about 24 students graduating this Spring.  We want to make sure all graduating seniors are able to take the courses they need to graduate.  So, those students who are graduating will have priority for registration for 400-level classes.  Please see specific comments for design electives and Capstone below.

What if a class fills up?
If you try to register for a course, and it seems to be full, then ask to be put on the wait list and request a permission number from the instructor. Use the instructions provided at the top of this message.

What if I know I have all the prereqs for a course, but Student Center gives me a prereq error?
If you receive a prereq error while trying to add an open course, first  double-check that you’ve successfully completed all the prerequisites.  Then use the instructions provided at the top of this message to request a permission number.  Unfortunately, not all transfer courses are recognized by the Student Center registration system automatically.

ENGR 211--Dynamics
You will need a permission number for this course.  Use the instructions provided at the top of this message and contact ERE Department Chair, Beth Eschenbach <beth@humboldt.edu>.

ENGR 225--Computational Methods I

ENGR 492--Capstone
Capstone will only be offered to students who are graduating in Spring 2018 and possibly to a few students who are graduating in Fall 2018.  You will need to contact Prof Eileen Cashman <eileen.cashman@humboldt.edu> for a permission number for this course.  Please include a pdf copy of your DARS report along with your request as described above.  

ENGR 434--Air Quality Management
Students who have all the prerequisites for this class, including ENGR 416--Transport, may register without a permission #.  Students who would like to take this course concurrently with ENGR 416 should use the instructions provided at the top of this message and contact the course instructor, Liza Boyle <liza.boyle@humboldt.edu> for consideration.

ENGR 441--Hydrology II
Students who have all the prerequisites for this class may register without a permission #.  If the class fills before you are able to register, use the instructions provided at the top of this message and contact the course instructor, Margaret Lang <margaret.lang@humboldt.edu> to be put on a waiting list should seats become available.

ENGR 481--Distributed Renewable Electricity Systems

FAQ – Can I take a 4th design elective?
Some ERE seniors are interested in taking a 4th design elective.  Please do NOT sign up for a 4th design elective until the week before the spring semester.  We want to be sure that all ERE students get a chance to sign up for classes they need to graduate.
 
Challenging Four Year Graduation Plan

The ERE faculty has put together a suggested schedule for completing the ERE program in 4 years.  This 4-year plan* assumes you are ready to enroll in MATH 109 - Calculus I.  Please note that many students take longer than 4 years, as they are not able to successfully complete the suggested number of units each semester.  Many students must work outside of school, have family responsibilities, or for some other reason must take a lower unit load.
