Announcing the Redwoods Rising Apprenticeship Application Deadline: March 9, 2018

Forestry and Botany Apprenticeship 

Redwoods Rising is a new and unique collaborative between California State Parks, Redwood National Park, and Save the Redwoods League that integrates multiple disciplines and leverages the capacity and talents of each partner to achieve landscape scale restoration. 

Description of work – Six Apprentices (3 Forestry and 3 Botany) will be selected to work on ongoing forest restoration projects in Redwood National and State Parks. Applicants should expect long days with arduous fieldwork, extended trips (up to four days) that involve camping, hiking off trail, variable hours, and work that will require attention to detail. Work will begin on May 21st and end on August 10th (12 weeks), and work weeks will not exceed 40 hours. Work duty stations will include Fort Humboldt in Eureka, CA, State Park offices at Patrick Point State Park, and the Redwood National Park South Operations Center in Orick, CA. Student will be required to provide their own transportation to work duty stations. Compensation will include an hourly wage of $15/hour. 

Qualifications – This Apprenticeship is open to all students currently enrolled in a Cal Poly Humboldt natural resource-based program. 

  • Forestry: A background in forestry is preferred, but students from other natural resource programs will be considered. Applicants should be familiar with basic data collection methods, equipment (e.g. DBH tape, laser range finder, GPS units), and data entry using Excel and Access. 
  • Botany: A background in Botany and plant taxonomy is preferred, but students from other natural resource programs will be considered. Applicants should be familiar with basic data collection methods, plant identification, equipment (e.g. GPS units), and data entry using Excel.  

There will be an informational meeting on Monday, March 5 at 5:00 PM in Forestry 103
