STEM Student Representative Job Description

Job Description: Under the supervision of the Inclusive Excellence Coordinator and the Project Directors for the HSI-STEM and HHMI grant, the appointed staff will serve as a student representative and liaison for the shared work of the grants, which aim to increase inclusive excellence for students majoring in STEM disciplines. The Student Representative will serve on on various campus committees, promote events relative to their positions and role, collaborate with the HSI-STEM Coordinators and their peers in STEM majors to facilitate programming and events from inception to implementation, and evaluation. Reporting will be to supervisors and other members of the HSI STEM Steering Committee. Successful candidates will be self-motivated, solutions-oriented, and willing to work with others to help craft the ongoing work as it materializes.

Pay rate & Time Commitment: $12.00 per hour. STEM Student Representatives will work an average of 4 hours a week per semester with up to an additional 20 hours per semester dedicated to event planning and hosting (84 hrs*$12/hr = ~ $1000 per semester). Hours will vary by week. Wages are funded by the HSI STEM grant. Paid job training is planned to start in March 2018 and position will start Fall 2018. We seek 1-3 individuals for this position depending on current staffing & availability.

Duties: Coordinate events throughout the semester that promote communication between unrepresented students in STEM, Project Directors and Coordinators, and HSI STEM Steering committee. Organize periodic STEM Coalition meetings to cultivate communication with and between relevant student groups (clubs, CCAEs, etc). Seek out and collaborate with staff, faculty, and student support resources that are interested in helping the same groups the grants are to serve. Gather and relay student needs, concerns, and proposed solutions to HSI STEM Steering committee. Attend scheduled steering committee and subcommittee meetings. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: 

  • Full-time or half-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing with the university
  • Ability and passion for working with and supporting diverse student populations
  • Strong communication skills
  • Able and willing to work on a team for multiple projects
  • Knowledge of different campus and community resources
  • Self-motivated and solutions-oriented
  • Preference for students pursuing a STEM major
  • Able to adapt quickly and accordingly to various situations

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Can commit to at least 2 consecutive semesters
  • Can speak to the experiences of historically underrepresented students in higher education
  • Junior or Senior or Graduate student status preferred
  • Previous participation in HSI STEM grant related efforts or activities
  • Experience working with relevant student groups, such as CCAEs or clubs
