Stream Geomorphology Field Technician Application Deadline: March 18, 2018

Are you interested in spending your summer working outdoors, camping, hiking in streams and getting paid?

Cal Poly Humboldt’s River Institute is looking to fill 4 Stream Geomorphology Field Technician positions.  The position will be from early-June to early/mid-August 2018 (with a few training days prior to June).  

Job Title: Stream Geomorphology Field Technician

Job duties include: 

  • Conduct geomorphic stream surveys throughout watersheds in coastal northern California
  • Drive short to long distances and hiking to stream survey locations
  • Handle stream survey equipment including stadia rod, laser range finder, measuring tape, and total station level
  • Collect stream survey data, communicating with crew leader/members, and recording data on field data sheets
  • Occasional assistance with data entry 

Fieldwork duration:  Early June to early/mid August 2018 (and a few training days prior to June)

Hourly rate: $13/hr 

Weekly work schedule: 3-5 days in the field; a typical day will be 8-10+ hours (overtime is paid)

 

Desired qualifications:

  • Coursework in hydrology, stream ecology, geology, fisheries biology, watershed sciences, geomorphology or related fields
  • Experience and interest working in streams and spending time in coastal California watersheds
  • Experience with both car camping and backpacking; experience in remote locations
  • Experience/understanding in navigating to a designated location using a map and GPS
  • Ability to work long hours in a stream setting with uneven ground, hot and cold temperatures, stinging/biting insects, and poison oak
  • Ability to swim
  • Ability to hike long distances both on and off-trail
  • Positive attitude and a good sense of humor
