A Geometer’s view of Statistical Inference and Machine learning, April 7th

Cal Poly Humboldt Mathematics department Colloquium series presents the new lecture: A Geometer’s view of Statistical Inference and Machine learning presented by Dr. Jesus De Loera from UC Davis. In this talk, the relation of inference and learning to combinatorial geometry is explained. Along the way, you will see fascinating connections to the coupon collector problem, topological data analysis, and the computation of Tukey centerpoints of data clouds (a high-dimensional generalization of median). All new theorems are joint work with T. Hogan, R. D. Oliveros, E. Jaramillo-Rodriguez, and A. Torres-Hernandez. The lecture will be held at room 166 at the BSS on April 7th, at 4pm.
