Opportunities to join in with your peers on Design Projects outside of class!
The Spring 2021 semester will be online but we still have three opportunities for you to work with peers on Design competitions that will be fun, add some depth to your resume, and connect you to your peers outside of class. Please consider signing up for one (or more) of these opportunities!
ENGR 480: Energy Systems Design and Competition
This spring the "Energy" 480 course will be focused on energy and air quality. Dr. Peter Alstone will facilitate this course. Students who participate will work together as a team to design and build portable air quality sensors that can be powered by solar. This project is inspired by the need to improve our understanding of air quality and a hunger for learning about solar photovoltaic system design.
This course is a one-unit Credit/No Credit course. Meeting times to be determined based on participant availability. There are no pre-requisites – ALL are welcome!
ENGR 480: Mid-Pacific Student Conference and Design Competition
This spring the "Water" 480 course will facilitate student participation in the Mid-Pac Design conference and competition. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Sustainable Solutions Competition challenges students to develop a stronger understanding of sustainability and learn to incorporate sustainable solutions into everyday problems that engineers incur. In this year’s competition, students will focus on building a solution to the COVID-19 pandemic issue involving the increase in need for outdoor, socially-distant activities. Dr. Brad Finney will facilitate this course. Students who participate will work together as a team to design and present their solution at the Mid-Pac student conference and competition. The competition dates are April 15-16, 2021.
This course is a one-unit Credit/No Credit course. Meeting times to be determined based on participant availability. There are no pre-requisites – ALL are welcome!
Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM)
MCM is a contest where teams of undergraduates use mathematical modeling to present their solutions to real world problems. Humboldt ERE is happy to sponsor multiple teams. A team may consist of up to three students. The competition will be held February 4-8, 2021. We encourage students who have completed ENGR 326 to compete. You can find two other students you would like to work with or let us know of your interest and we will try to put you on a team. For more information visit https://www.comap.com/undergraduate/contests/mcm/. If you would like to participate in the contest, send an email to brad.finney@humboldt.edu) by Friday, January 8, 2021.
