Awards, Scholarships & Research Funds

Each spring the department awards students for their outstanding achievement. Award winners are recognized at a department celebration and at a local ASCE chapter meeting.

Thomas William Warnock Outstanding ERE Graduate

Formerly the Outstanding ERE Graduate Award. A big thanks to Thomas and Rene Warnock for donating a $1,000 reward starting 2018. One or two graduating ERE students are selected each year for a combination of demonstrated excellent academic achievement and professional potential in Environmental Resources Engineering.

Roscoe-Schenler Award

Awarded in honor of two former Humboldt Engineering professors: Jim Roscoe and Bill Schenler. One or more ERE students each year are recognized for outstanding potential in Environmental Resources Engineering. Award amount varies depending on interest rates (typically $500-$1000).

Homer Arnold Award

Awarded in honor of former Humboldt Environmental Resources Engineering professor: Homer Arnold. One or two ERE students each year are recognized for demonstrated outstanding achievement in applied Environmental Resources Engineering. Award amount varies depending on interest rates (typically $500 - $1000).

GHD Leadership Award

Awarded to one ERE junior or senior each year for demonstrated leadership in the ERE department or through ERE sponsored clubs such as ERESARESU, SHPE, or SWE. The award will recognize a student of high technical competence who also shows leadership potential and desire to help advance the field of environmental engineering. Award amount is typically $1000. Landau Associates Award

Active 2004-2015:  Awarded once a year to a randomly chosen ERE student who has passed thermodynamics (ENGR 331). Award amount is $500.  Visit the Landau Associates website for more information about the company that sponsors this award, their projects, and careers for engineers.  The Landau Award is no longer active.  See Bower Scholarship info below for subsequent award sponosored by Landau's then CEO.

Bower ERE Scholarship

Awarded once a year to a randomly chosen ERE student who has passed thermodynamics (ENGR 331).  Award amount is $1,000.  The sponsor for this award is ERE alumnus, Jay Bower, P.E.  Mr. Bower’s career focused primarily on environmental permitting and on characterization and remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater, working directly for industry and as a consultant. For the last 17 years of his full-time career he served as Chief Operating Officer and then CEO of Landau Associates, a Pacific Northwest engineering consulting firm.

Marty Lay SHN Award

Awarded in honor of Marty Lay, an Humboldt ERE graduate and consulting engineer at SHN Consulting Engineers and Geologists.  This award recognizes one ERE student each year who is nominated by his/her peers for demonstrated teamwork, passion and leadership in Environmental Resources Engineering.  Award amount is $1,000.  Visit the SHN website for more information about the company that sponsors this award, their projects, and careers for engineers.

Alden Burrows Engineering Scholarship

Awarded in honor of former Humboldt Environmental Resources Engineering professor: Alden Burrows. One student each year is recognized for outstanding leadership and academic excellence in Statics and Dynamics. Award amount is currently $1,000.

The Marion Diller Scholarship

Awarded to an ERE student who plans to work in sustainability. Students submit an essay where they explain how they have demonstrated outstanding contribution or community service in the area of sustainable and just use of natural resources, e.g. energy efficiency energy conservation, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, recycling or waste reduction. Must have successfully completed ENGR 326 or equivalent. Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students submit an essay to apply. Award amount is $2,000.

Engineers Without Borders Award

Active 2017-2022: This award recognizes one student’s contribution to ERE club projects, fundraisers, and community service, as well as professional-student interaction and social responsibility within and outside the ERE communityAward recipients are selected through a peer nomination process, and the award is given by the North Coast Professional Chapter of Engineers Without Borders.

Robert and Suzanne Wienke Scholarship

Awarded to a junior or senior level student majoring in ERE who plans to work in the public service sector or non-profit sector. Students submit an essay to apply. Award amount is currently $1,000.

Robert. W. Campbell Sr. Scholarship

This award recognizes one or more ERE students who have demonstrated that they are successful in the major and have financial need. Preference is given to intercollegiate athletes and students who have demonstrated commitment to the program. This scholarship includes a financial award of $1000 or more.

Academic Excellence ERE Graduate Award

This award recognizes outstanding academic achievement in the ERE program. This prestigious award carries much honor and is reserved for a graduating senior with a consistent record of academic excellence throughout their studies in the ERE program.

ERE Community Award 

This award, selected and funded by the ERE faculty, recognizes an ERE student who has contributed to making the ERE community a more inclusive, equitable and welcoming place.

ERE Delta Award 

This award, selected and funded by the ERE faculty, recognizes a student who has inspired the ERE faculty by their commitment to their own education, and their personal growth throughout their time as a student.

Gearheart Ecological Engineering Research Fund

Fund estasblished to support research in nature-based technologies and fund one or more two-year graduate fellowships annually, undergraduate research assistantships, and provide equipment and travel funding in support of faculty research. 

Bob and Lou Cane Memorial Fund

Fund established to honor the memories of Bob and Lou Cane by supporting two student summer internships with financial opportunities (wages) at the Schatz Energy Research Center. Internships will provide each student with $5,000, starting in summer 2023. 

Jay Bower Engineering Research Experience Fund

Fund established to provide undergradute Engineering students with hands-on learning opportunities by supporting engineering faculty research. Funds must be used to support undergraduate research assistantships and may also be used for other research-related expenses such as equipment purchases, travel stipends for faculty and students, publication costs, etc.
